A lot of people want to improve their appearance because of their work or social life. Two decades ago we could propose our patient only fillings and crowns. Now we use many methods changing the shape or colour of the teeth with minimal interference into the tissue, such as bleaching, veneers, inlays, onlays and overlays made of very strong composites or porcelain. This could be possible especially thanks to an incredible progress in techniques of bonding.
Bleaching
If your teeth are sound, but you don’t like their colour (they are too yellow or too gray), you can try to make them brighter.
There are two methods of bleaching teeth:
1. Chair side bleaching = in office bleaching (it may require more then one
office visit of 30-90 min.) During this procedure your dentist protects the gums with special silicon or a rubber dam and applies the bleaching gel all over the teeth. Sometimes the special source of light is used to accelerate this process. In office bleaching is faster but not more effective.
2. At - home bleaching: your dentist takes impression of your teeth and
sends it to the lab, where the special splint (mouth guard) is made for you.
During the second visit you are taught how to use it. You apply the bleaching
gel recommended by dentist to the splint and place on your teeth for a few
hours a day or night. This method can take 1-3 weeks but it is safer
and softer for teeth than the first one (and much cheaper). The effect is also better and quite
long lasting (about 1 year, sometimes even more). After this period you can use the splint again.
We do not recommend the first method (because of quite common irritation of teeth
and other complications).
Bleaching must be preceded by cleaning the teeth and changing of leaking
fillings and this operation is not included in the price of this procedure. Your gums must be free of inflammation.
There is also possibility to lighten a dead, discoloured tooth. The procedure of bleaching in this case must be preceded by the correct root canal work. Then the special gel is applied into the cavity in the tooth’s crown for a few days. This procedure is repeated 3-4 times until the colour of the tooth is satisfying.
Veneers
If the enamel of your teeth is damaged, has severe discoloration or there are some irregularities in the arrangement and shape of the teeth, we can propose veneers. They are thin, porcelain or composite hulls, like a nail-tip, made in lab after slight enamel preparing, bonded on teeth with very special adhesives.
All-ceramic crowns
Sometimes the condition of teeth doesn’t allow using veneers. In such situation there is an option to do very cosmetic, all-ceramic crowns based on a very strong type of porcelain, instead of metal. They can be fully hand made or partly computer designed and cut (CAD/CAM techniques). There is also a possibility to do all-ceramic bridges.
Both techniques, veneers and all-ceramic crowns, are very demanding of dentists and technicians skills. They are pieces of art, like a hand made jewellery. That is why they are the most expensive items on the price list.
